Personal Life
Allah Rakhma Rahman was born as A. S. Dileep Kumar, on 6 January 1967, in Madras, Tamil Nadu. His father, R. K. Shekhar was a prominent film composer and conductor for Malayalam and Tamil movies. His mother’s name is Kareema.
At only four years old, Rahman began playing the piano. His father died when he was nine. At 11, he was supporting his family by playing the keyboard. He was studying in Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan but he had to work, so he was constantly absent and failing classes. He then entered r the Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School, where he formed a band with his schoolmates.
He dropped out of school to be a full-time musician. A.R. Rahman became a keyboard player for different bands including Roots and Nemesis Avenue. At a young age, he worked with several well-respected musicians and composers in India – Master Dhanraj, Vijaya Bhaskar, M. S. Viswanathan, Hamsalekha, among others.
Rahman also joined Zakir Hussain, L. Shankar, and Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan on world tours which led to a scholarship from Trinity College London to the Trinity College of Music. He graduated with a degree in Western Music.
In 1988, he converted to Islam, and changed his name to A.R. Rakhman.
Professional Career
A.R. Rahman started to create jingles for advertisements for brands and tv channels. He was later approached by the Bollywood director Mani Ratman to create the score for the Tamil film “Roja.”
In 1992, he started Panchathan Record Inn, which would become one of the most advanced recording studios in India and all of Asia. His film career took off from there. He then worked on the film “Yoddha,” a Malayalam film. The following year, he received the National Film Awards (Silver Lotus) award for best music director for “Roja.”
In 1999, Rahman partnered with choreographers and a Tamil film-dancing troupe to perform with Michael Jackson at his concert in Germany.
Rahman became more famous and composed over a hundred film scores. He wrote the score for “Lagaan” in 2001, which is the first Bollywood film nominated for an Academy Award.
He wrote the music for his first stage production, “Bombay Dreams,” in 2002. In 2004, Rahman collaborated with the Finnish folk-music band Värttinä , on the Toronto production of “The Lord of the Rings.”
