Luis Alfonso Rodríguez López-Cepero, professionally known as Luis Fonsi, was born on April 15, 1978 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He is the oldest child of Alfonso Rodríguez and Delia López-Cepero. He has two younger siblings named Jean Rodríguez, who also is a singer, and Tatiana Rodríguez.
While he was growing up, he idolized a popular Puerto Rican boy band called “Menudo,” which was one of the biggest Latin boy bands in history.
When he was 10 years old, his family moved to Orlando, Florida. He studied at Westridge Middle School and Dr. Phillips High Schoo. When he was in high school, he joined an a cappella group called “The Big Guys”. They sang at school parties and local festivals. One of the members, Joey Fatone, later joined the famous group NSYNC.
In 1995, Fonsi got a full scholarship to Florida State University. While at the university, he was part of the school choir and sang with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He then dropped out to pursue his music career. He was offered a recording contract by Universal Music Latin.

In 1998, Luis Fonsi recorded his first album entitled “Comenzaré.” It contained the singles “Si Tú Quisieras,” “Dime Como,” “Perdóname,” and “Me Iré.” the album was a huge success not only in Puerto Rico but also throughout Latin America, peaking at number 11 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart.
In 2000, he released his second album “Eterno.” In the same year, he did a duet with Christina Aguilera for her Spanish-language album called “Mi Reflejo.”
In 2002, Luis was the opening act for Britney Spears’ Dream Within a Dream Tour in the US and Mexico. He also released “Amor Secreto” and debuted his English album “Fight The Feeling” in this year.
“Abrazar la vida” was Fonsi’s gift album.
