Personal Life
Jenni Rivera was born July 2, 1969, in Long Beach, California to her parents Rosa and Pedro Rivera. Her parents were both from Mexico. The singer grew up with her four brothers and one sister. She grew up speaking both English and Spanish.
She was a straight-A student until she became pregnant with her first child, Janney “Chiquis” Marin-Rivera, in her sophomore year of high school. While raising her daughter, she began working in flea markets selling CDs to support both of them. She eventually got her GED and graduated high school as a class valedictorian.
Jenni later married Janney’s father, Jose Trinidad Marin. They had two more kids, Jacqueline and Michael. Their marriage ended in1992, because of physical and emotional abuse.
Rivera earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from California State University. She worked in real estate after and moved to Cintas Acuario where she worked for her father’s record.
She also worked as a singer at local bars where she would meet her future husband, Juan Lopez. They married in 1997 and had two other kids. He was unfaithful and was caught smuggling immigrants which ended their marriage.
In 2010, she married the baseball player Esteban Loaiza, but they got separated shortly after. However, their divorce was not finalized.
On December 9, 2012, Jenni Rivera died in an aircraft accident, which crashed near Monterrey, Mexico.
Professional Career
Jenni Rivera recorded a song as a gift to her father on Father’s Day in 1992. At first, her songs did not do well as the genre she was in was mostly dominated by men.
Rivera signed to Balboa Records in 1993 and Sony Music in the late 1990s. In 1999, she signed with Fonovisa Records.
In 2001, she received her first Latin Grammy nomination with the songs “Dejate Amar” and “Se las Voy a Dar an Otro.” She rose to fame in 2015 when she released the song “Parrandera, Rebelde y Atrevida” which became a commercial success and was included in the Top 10 list of the Billboard Top Latin Albums Chart.
She had her first full mariachi studio album titled “La Gran Senora” in 20019. The album was nominated for Best Ranchero Album.
Her compilation album “La Misma Gran Senora” was released in 2012 and was a part of Billboard’s Top Latin Albums Chart.
