Martin Gore was born Martin Lee Gore on July 23, 1961 in Dagenham, Essex/East London, United Kingdom. His biological father was an African-American G.I. stationed in Britain. He was raised by his mother Pamela and his stepfather, David Gore. He has two younger half-sisters named Karen, born in 1967, and Jacqueline, born in 1968. Gore soon met his biological father in Southern America.
As a child, he said he grew up in a stable home. He was an introvert and preferred to be alone. On the other hand, he also enjoyed being at school and taking part in foreign exchange trips.
In the 1970s, Martin taught himself how to play the keyboard and never had the formal training.
He studied at Nicholas Comprehensive School, Basildon, where he became the guitarist in a band called Norman and the Worms. He became classmates with Andy Fletcher, who was another founding member of Depeche Mode.
Martin Gore left the school in 1979 to take on a job as a bank cashier, but he was still active in the band.

Depeche Mode was formed in 1980. Martin Gore reunited with Andy Fletcher and Fletcher recruited Martin into his band, Composition of Sound, with Vince Clarke. David Gahan became the lead singer of the band. They soon changed the name of their group to Depeche Mode which took inspiration from a French magazine. It translates to “Fashion News” or “Fashion Update.” They became one of the biggest bands of the 1980s.
They released 14 studio albums with greatest hits such as “Personal Jesus,” “Enjoy the Silence,” “I Feel You,” “People Are People,” “Everything Counts,” “Shake the Disease,” and “Never Let Me Down Again.”
