Personal Life

Charlie Cheever was born on August 2, 1981 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Not much details are known about his family and siblings. 

He went to Shady Side Academy for his secondary education. He later attended Harvard University from 1999 to 2003 where he received a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science.

While at Harvard, Cheever created a database of all the students from the university including the dorms they were living in. This became the inspiration for Mark Zuckerberg’s creation of Facebook, which was called FaceMash before.

Professional Career

From August 2003 to December 2005, Charlie Cheever worked at Amazon in Seattle, Washington. Later on, he was recruited by Mark Zuckerberg to work at Facebook as one of the company’s early engineers. 

While working at Facebook, he was in charge of the creation of Facebook Connect Authentication, Facebook Video, and turning Facebook website into a platform. He worked as a programmer and an engineering manager at the company from January 2006 to March 2009. He was the top engineer and known for creating the bunnylol, which is a Python tool still used by Facebook engineers.

In 20019, he left Facebook to establish Quora with Adam D’Angelo. They founded Quora with an $11 million USD investment of the former Facebook executive, Matt Cohler of Benchmark Capital. Just three years after founding Quora, he stepped down in 2012. He remains an advisor of the company until the present. 

Currently, he works as the CEO of a startup company called Expo, which specializes in translation machine for mobile app code. Expo makes it easier to develop applications using React Native for a number of major platforms which include Web, iOS and Android. Expo is used by big companies such as Tesla, Walmart, and Airbnb.
