Before founding his own venture, he was a founding member of SpaceX, which is an American aerospace manufacturer founded by Elon Musk in 2002. It is based in Hawthorne, California. At SpaceX, he worked as the Vice President of Propulsion Engineering, and Propulsion Chief Technical Officer (CTO). 

He is also a racecar driver and owns a lot of cars.

Personal Life

Thomas “Tom” Mueller was born in St. Maries, a city in north central Idaho, on March 16, 1961. His father worked as a logger and wanted Tom to follow in his footsteps.

Mueller did not fulfill his father’s wish but achieved his dream which was to become an engineer. When he was still a young boy, he would build and fly Estes model rockets. He continued to fly and experiment with rockets. Once, he even built one out of his father’s oxy-acetylene welder and discovered that adding water would allow the rocket to thrust higher and stronger. 

Even though in the end, Tom Mueller became an engineer, he also worked as a logger for four summers to pay for his school fees. He studied at the University of Idaho from 1979 to 1985, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

After graduation, he got several job offers from Oregon and Idaho, but he still decided to move to California. There, he went to a job fair and started working in satellite design. Shortly after, he began developing liquid rocket engines.

Tom attended Loyola Marymount University where he received his master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1992.

Professional Career

Mueller worked for TRW Inc., for 15 years. It is an American corporation involved in a number of industries like aerospace, automotive, electronics, and credit reporting. He was responsible for developing liquid rocket engines. He was the lead engineer in the development of the TR-106, a rocket engine developed by TRW.

He worked for SpaceX starting in 2002. He was the Vice President for Propulsion until 2014. He then became the Propulsion CTO from 2014 to 2016. He led the development of many engines for the Falcon 1, which was a project by SpaceX. He also worked on the engines of Falcon 9 and Dragon spacecraft. In 2019, he became the Senior Advisor of the SpaceX program.

In 2013, he was a commencement speaker for Loyola Marymount University graduate students. The following year, Tom Mueller was nominated for the Wyld Award which was presented by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). 

On November 20, 2020, he retired from SpaceX, and in 2021, he founded Impulse Space.
