Personal Life

Tom Higgenson grew up in the outskirts of Chicago, in Villa Park. His parent divorced when he was a kid. Tom lived with his mom, Cindy. Meanwhile, his father, John, lived in the neighboring town called Lombard.

As Tom grew up, he was very active in sports and in school. He used to play tennis, soccer, and baseball when he was in high school. He also acted in school plays. 

Music is also one of Tom Higgenson’s passions. He dreamt of having his own band. In 1997, this dream came true and he started his musical journey when he was a teenager. He founded the band Plain White T’s when he was 18 years old. 

The band was made up of his high school friends named Dave Tirio and Ken Fletcher in Lombard, Illinois.

Professional Career

The same year they founded the band, they played in a club in Wrigleyville, Chicago called Metro, for the first time. At this time, the original members were Tom Higgenson, Dave Tirio, Steve Mast, and Ken Fletcher. 

Higgenson was the lead vocalist and guitarist, Fletcher was on bass guitar, Tirio was on drums, and Mast was on guitar and sang back-up vocals.

In 2000, they self-produced their own album entitled, “Come on Over.” In the middle of recording the album, Tom was involved in a car accident where he suffered serious injuries.  He ruptured one of his kidneys, lacerated a lung, and broke three vertebrae. He also needed to have a brace on for three months.

The band made their full-length album in 2002, named “Stop”. This attracted Fearless Records. While touring, Fletcher and Mast left and were replaced by Tim Lopez and Mike Retondo. Then, Tirio switched to rhythm guitar and a new drummer, De’Mar Hamilton, was added to the band.

In 2005, their album All That We Needed was released. In 2006, Plain White T’s signed with Hollywood Records and produced “Every Second Counts”. This album included their number one hit song “Hey There, Delilah” which was nominated for two Grammy awards.

It sold about four million digital copies and their album Every Second Counts was certified Gold.  In 2007, the band performed their single “Our Time Now” on one episode of the Nickelodeon TV series, iCarly. The next year, the band released their album “Big Bad World.”In late 2008, Plain White T’s had joined the Rock Band Live tour with other bands.

In 2012, the band covered The Ramones’ song “Pet Sematary” for the 2012 Disney film Frankenweenie. Around 2015, the band left Hollywood Records.

The song “Hey There, Delilah” was inspired by a cross-country runner whom Tom met. Although they were never in a relationship, she was Tom’s guest for the 2008 Grammy awards.

It is said that the singer had one known relationship before but presently, he’s single. He was also never engaged or married.
