Personal Life
Anthony John “Tony” Soprano was born on August 22, 1959, to his parents Livia and Johnny Soprano. He has two sisters named Janice and Barbara. He was raised in Ironbound in Newark, New Jersey. Johnny Soprano was a capo in the DiMeo crime family.
During his childhood, Tony did not have much emotional support from his family. He described his mother as a cruel and joyless woman. He also had a troubled and complicated relationship with his sister, Janice. Their relationship became problematic as they grew up and became adults.
Tony went to high school with Artie Bucco and Davey Scatino with whom he remained friends later in life. While in high school, he played basketball and football and even nearly made All-County. Also, during that time, he met his future wife, Carmela DeAngelis.
When he was a teen, he spent two summers at Pat Blundetto’s farm, who was their uncle. Pat was a soldier in the DiMeo organization.
Tony went to Seton Hall University for his college education. Before completing his freshman year, he dropped out and worked for his father’s crime organization.
Professional Career
Tony was part of an unofficial crew of young criminals which includes Silvio Dante, Ralph Cifaretto, and Jackie Aprile, Sr. Tony gained some notoriety in the DiMeo crime family by robbing a card game run by Michele “Feech” La Manna.
Soprano committed his first murder when he killed a small-time bookie named Willie Overall when he was only 23 years old. The murder happened on Labor Day weekend in 1982.
His father guided Tony to be the head of their crime family until his death in 1986 from emphysema, which is caused by his heavy smoking habit.
By 1995, Tony was a well-respected caporegime in the organization when the boss Ercoli “Eckley” DiMeo, was sent to prison. When Tony was sent to prison, Giacomo “Jackie” Aprile, Sr. became the acting boss in December 1995. The organization was peaceful until 1998. When Jackie died in September 1998 crisis ensued as to who would lead the family. This quickly ended as Corrado “Junior” Soprano became boss.
In the series, Tony has committed eight murders in total. The murders had different emotional effects on him, some offered him relief, while others, burdens.
