Personal Life
Rupi Kaur was born October 4, 1992 into a Sikh family in Punjab, India. When she was three years old, her family moved to Canada to escape the persecution of Sikhs. When they arrived in Canada, they lived in a one-bedroom basement flat and slept in the same bed. Her father worked as a truck driver and they settled in Brampton, Ontario.
When Rupi’s father was away, he often wrote poetry to his mother. Growing up, she developed herself to be on “constant survival mode” as she watched her parents be subjects of racism. She also saw many of her family members become victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse.
Kaur performed kirtan and Indian classical music when she was younger and dreamt of being an astronaut and fashion designer. She was very self-conscious and has been on the receiving end of bad comments about her appearance. She found solace in literature written by Maya Angelou, Dr. Seuss, Roald Dahl, Amrita Pritam, and J. K. Rowling.
Rupi Kaur studied rhetoric and professional writing at the University of Waterloo while teaching creative writing to high school and college students.
Professional Career
Rupi Kaur began performing poetry in 2009. She started writing to try to put her traumatic experiences into words, having just left an abusive relationship. She decided to perform her poetry stating that, “I wanted to find a voice, because I had been voiceless for so long.”
Her first anthology was called “milk and honey,” which she submitted to several journals and magazines with no success. She self-published it on Createspace on November 4, 2014. It was re-released by Andrew McMeel Publishing as it became more prominent on social media.
She fully realized that she had a huge audience when there was a long line during her poetry reading in 2015. The following year, she performed a TED talk.
The following year, she was inducted into the Brampton Arts Walk of Fame and published her second book, “the sun and her flowers.” Also in 2017, Rupi Kaur performed at the Jaipur Literary Festival.
