Personal Life
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien or J.R.R. Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892, in Bloemfontein, Orange Free State. His parents were Arthur and Mabel Tolkien. He had a younger brother named Hilary Arthur Reuel Tolkien.
When he was three years old, he went to England with his mother. His father died in South Africa due to rheumatic fever before he could join them. Because of his father’s death, their family had no source of income. They stayed with his mother’s parents in King’s Heath. After a couple of years, they moved to Sarehole.
Tolkien and his younger brother were educated by their mother at home. At a very young age, J.R.R. Tolkien was taught Latin by his mother and he was very fascinated by languages. When he was 12, his mother died of diabetes. Before her mother’s death, she assigned guardianship of her two sons to Father Francis Xavier Morgan. After Mabel’s death, Tolkien continued his studies at the King Edward’s School, Birmingham, and later transferred to St Philip’s School. In 1903, he won a Foundation Scholarship and returned to King Edward’s.
In October 1911, he began attending Exeter College, Oxford. His course was English Language and Literature and he graduated in 1915.
Professional Career
J.R.R. Tolkien left the army ranked as a lieutenant during World War I. After the war, his first job was at Oxford English Dictionary working on the etymology of words of Germanic origin beginning with the letter W.
He became a reader in English language at the University of Leeds in 1920. In 1925, he went back to Oxford as Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon, with a fellowship in Pembroke College. While at Pembroke, Tolkien wrote “The Hobbit” and the first two installments of “The Lord of the Rings.”
In 1945, he moved to Merton College, Oxford and became a Merton Professor of English Language and Literature until his retirement in 1959. In 1948, he finished “The Lord of the Rings.”
J.R.R Tolkien received an honorary degree from the National University of Ireland in 1954.
He died on September 2, 1973.
