Louis Gossett Jr. was born on May 27, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York. He is of African-American ethnicity and holds an American nationality. His parents are Louis Gossett Sr. and Hellen Rebecca. Gossett Sr. worked as a porter and Rebecca worked as a nurse.
He went to Abraham Lincoln High School in 1954. He also received an athletic scholarship at New York University when he graduated. Because of his towering height, he was invited to play basketball for the said university but declined because he wanted to focus on theater.

Louis Gosset Jr.’s high school teacher was the one who encouraged him to audition for Broadway. He was selected for a starring role before entering NYU.
He replaced Bill Gunn as Spencer Scott in Broadway’s “Take a Giant Step” when he was just 17 years old and still in high school.
Gossett was also a part of “A Raisin in the Sun” in 1959. The play was adapted for the screen in 1961 where he had his film debut.
He was also a part of the original cast of “The Blacks” which is the longest-running off-Broadway play of the decade with 1,408 performances.
In 1977, he was a part of the miniseries “Roots” where he got his Emmy Award for his role of Fiddler. In 1982, he got a role in the film “Officer and a Gentleman” winning him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
In 1986, Gossett played Colonel Chappy Sinclair in the film “Iron Eagle” which has three sequels. He played the fictional U.S. President Gerald Fitzhugh in the 2005 movie “Left Behind: World at War.”
