Personal Life
Stroud was born on October 20, 1961, in Toronto, particularly in the neighborhood of Mimico. He went to Mimico High School. He then attended Fanshawe College in London, Ontario where he completed the Music Industry Arts program.
After graduating, he worked for the music video channel MuchMusic for several years, and as a songwriter for the band, New Regime. During this time, he was also a garbage collector for the City of Toronto.
Les Stroud became a guide for Black Feather Wilderness Adventures. This is where he met his future wife, photographer Susan Jamison. The two married in 1994 and had their honeymoon in the wild.
The couple settled in Huntsville, Ontario with their two children. They founded the outdoor outfit Wilderness Voice and the media company Wilderness Spirit Productions.
Professional Career
In 2001, Les Stroud produced two one-hour specials for the science news show @discovery.ca. This followed Stroud filming his own survival in the wilderness.
He created “Survivorman” in 2004. It is a documentary adventure program that aired on the Outdoor Life Network, the Science Channel, and the Discovery Channel.
Stroud has also produced other very remarkable survival shows. These include “Off the Grid with Les Stroud” in 2006 and “Snowshoes and Solitude” which was awarded the Best Documentary at the Muskoka Festival. It was also named the Best Film in the Waterwalker Film Festival.
He also produced a children’s TV show in 2010, “Survive This” for Cartoon Network which was nominated for Best Children’s or Youth Non-Fiction Program or Series. The second installment of ‘Survivorman “Beyond Survival with Les Stroud” also aired in 2010.
