His family moved to Arizona and then to Florida for his father’s job. After a while, his parents went their separate ways and he and his sister lived together with their mother in Santa Monica, California. About a year later, John and his mother relocated to Mar Vista, Los Angeles, with his stepfather, who, according to him, was really supportive of his music.

When Slovak died of a heroin overdose in 1988, Anthony Kiedis, the band’s vocalist, encouraged John to audition to be the guitarist. When he got into the band, he was so happy that he ran around their house screaming.
His first album with RHPC is “Mother’s Milk” in 1989 and the second was “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” in 1991. “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” reached #3 on Billboard and sold over 13 million copies worldwide.
