John Frusciante was born in Queens, New York City, on March 5, 1970. His father is named John Augustus Frusciante and is a Juilliard-trained pianist. His dad later became a lawyer and a circuit court judge in Florida. His mother Gail West was a vocalist who gave up her career to be a housewife. His parents are both musically-inclined so John’s musical talent can’t be denied.
His family moved to Arizona and then to Florida for his father’s job. After a while, his parents went their separate ways and he and his sister lived together with their mother in Santa Monica, California. About a year later, John and his mother relocated to Mar Vista, Los Angeles, with his stepfather, who, according to him, was really supportive of his music.
At a young age, he became very interested in punk rock. When he was 11 years old, he studied guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, and David Gilmour. John was also a huge fan of Frank Zappa.
At 16, he dropped out of high school and was supported by his parents to pursue his music career in Los Angeles.
Professional Career
John Frusciante discovered the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1984 and first attended their concert when he was 15. He idolized RHPC’s guitarist, Hillel Slovak, who he became close with after some time. When Slovak died of a heroin overdose in 1988, Anthony Kiedis, the band’s vocalist, encouraged John to audition to be the guitarist. When he got into the band, he was so happy that he ran around their house screaming.
His first album with RHPC is “Mother’s Milk” in 1989 and the second was “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” in 1991. “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” reached #3 on Billboard and sold over 13 million copies worldwide. The band became so popular too fast and too soon, said Frusciante, and he just couldn’t keep up with it. He then left the band in 1992.
He released his first solo album, “Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt,” in 1994. Around this time, he was struggling with addiction. In 1996, he checked himself in at Las Encinas, a rehabilitation center in California.
In 1998, the remaining band members invited John back to the band. He went on tour with them and recorded a number of albums.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers agreed to a hiatus in 2007. Frusciante quit the group on July 29, 2009, but went on to rejoin the band again in 2019.
