He entered the University of Minnesota in 1990, where he studied engineering and computer science and graduated as summa cum laude. He received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Washington. There he worked under Craig Chambers who has been a computer scientist at Google since 2007. In 1996, Dean and Chambers worked on compilers and whole-program optimization techniques for object-oriented programming languages.
In 2009, Jeff Dean was elected to the National Academy of Engineering for his work on “the science and engineering of large-scale distributed computer systems.”
Professional Career
From 1991 to 1992, Jeff Dean worked at the University of Washington as an instructor for Introductory Programming II. He designed a curriculum for a class of 60 students.
He got a job at Compaq‘s Western Research Laboratory as a research assistant before joining Google. At Compaq, he was the co-designer of Digital’s Continuous Profiling Infrastructure and the inventor of ProfileMe.
He joined Google in 1999. Right now, he is a Google Senior Fellow and SVP of Google Research and Google Health. His areas of interest include large-scale distributed systems, compression techniques, microprocessor architecture, application of machine learning to search and other related problems, performance monitoring, and compiler optimizations.
While at Google, he worked on many projects. He is the co-designer and the implementer of the initial version of Google’s advertising serving system, Spanner, MapReduce, LevelDB, TensorFlow, and BigTable. He is the developer and the designer of Google’s AdSense for Content product involving both the production serving system. Aside from these, he worked on Google Translate and Google News.
He is also involved in Google’s engineering hiring process and the leader of Google’s deep learning research and engineering team.
