Personal Life

Djimon Hounsou was born in Cotonou, Benin on April 24, 1964. His parents are Albertine and Pierre Hounsou. When he was 12, he moved to Lyon, France with his brother, Edmond. Soon after arriving in Lyon, he dropped out of school and was temporarily homeless.

He had a chance to meet with a photographer who introduced him to a renowned fashion designer named Thierry Mugler. Mugler then encouraged him to pursue a career in modeling. In 1987, he became a model and began a career in Paris. Djimon relocated to the United States in 1990.

He was a speaker at the Summit on Climate Change at the United Nations held on September 22, 2009.

Professional Career

Hounsou first appeared in a number of music videos. From 1989 to 1991, he appeared in music videos of famous artists. Djimon worked with Paula Abdul for her song “Straight Up,” Madonna for her song “Express Yourself,” and Janet Jackson for her song “Love Will Never Do (Without You).” He was also in En Vogue’s music video for “Hold On.” 

His first movie was “Without You I’m Nothing” in 1990. He had also had minor roles in the television shows “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “ER.” He also had a guest role in the TV series “Alias.”  He had a bigger role in “Stargate” in 1994. He became more popular when he appeared in the Steven Spielberg film “Amistad” where he portrayed the character of Cinqué.

He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for “In America” in 2004. In 2006, he won the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “Blood Diamond.” He also received Academy Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and  Broadcast Film Critics Association nominations for his performance in “Blood Diamond.”

In 2008, it was announced that Djimon would voice Black Panther in the “Black Panther” television series. He also voiced Drago Blodfist in the animated film “How to Train Your Dragon 2.” He was cast as Korath the Pursuer in “Guardians of the Galaxy” in 2014. 

Djimon Hounsou joined the DC Extended Universe in 2018 when he voiced the Fisherman King Ricou in “Aquaman.” 

Djimon Hounsou Relationship Status

Dјіmоn Ноunѕоu began a relationship with the professional model, Кіmоrа Lее Ѕіmоnѕ, іn 2007. Тhе соuрlе had a son together, Кеnzо, born in 2009. The couple had a traditional commitment ceremony in Benin, Hounsou’s hometown, in 2008. They separated in November 2012.
