Personal Life

Artis Leon Ivey Jr., professionally known as Coolio,  was born in Compton, California. He was born on August 1, 1963.

His father Artis Sr., was a carpenter while his mother, Jackie, worked as a factory worker. The two divorced when Coolio was only 11 years old. His parents’ divorce had a huge effect on him and he had a hard time coping.

 He then joined a gang called the Baby Crips. He began bringing weapons to school when he was a teen. At only 17 years old, he spent a few months in jail for larceny. 

After attending Compton Community College. While in college, he got into the hip-hop scene. He started competing in contests under the name “Coolio Iglesias.” This led to him being featured on the Los Angeles radio station KDAY.

Having a budding music career, Coolio faced obstacles because of his drug addiction. He realized it was keeping him from realizing his dream, so he went into a rehab facility. 

After some time, he worked as a volunteer firefighter and security at the Los Angeles International Airport, before continuing her music career and becoming a rapper.

Coolio has served as a spokesperson for Environmental Justice and Climate Change and the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.

Professional Career

Coolio recorded his debut single in 1987, entitled “Whatcha Gonna Do?”  He also produced “What Makes You Dance (Force Groove)” with Nu-Skool the following year. 

In 1991, he joined the group WC and the Maad Circle,  which released the album “Ain’t a Damn Thang Changed” later that year.

Coolio signed with Tommy Boy Records in 1994 and released his first solo album “It Takes a Thief” in July the same year. His lead single “Fantastic Voyage” was played frequently on MTV and even peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

With its sales, the album achieved Platinum in the United States and Gold in Canada. The “Fantastic Voyage” was certified double Platinum by RIAA.

In 1995, Coolio, featuring the R&B artist LV released the song “Gangsta’s Paradise” for the film “Dangerous Minds.” It was one of the most successful and best-selling rap songs of all time. Coolio won a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance in 1996 for that song.

Gangsta’s Paradise” was also included on the “Billboard’s” Greatest Songs of All-Time list.  It was a massive success and was a part of VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop and “NME” magazine’s list of  100 Best Songs of the 1990s.

Even though he achieved success during the 90s he continued to record and produce more music and has won the hearts of many.

Aside from this, Coolio also appeared in several films and TV series. 

Coolio Dating History

Coolio married Josefa Salinas on May 18, 1996. Their marriage only lasted four years. 

It is believed that the rapper has 10 children from different women. His kids are Shayne, Kate, Artisha, Darius, Zhaneand, Artis, Milan, Grtis, Brandi, and lastly, Jackie.
