The novelist grew up in Saltillo, TX. In 1998, she graduated from Saltillo High School. Hoover studied at Texas A&M-Commerce where she majored in Social Work. She worked as a social worker and as a teacher before pursuing a career in writing.

In November 2011, Hoover started her first book “Slammed.” The novel was inspired by an Avett Brothers song with the lyrics “decide what to be and go be it.” After some months, her novel was reviewed by book blogger Maryse Black and has given it 5 stars. After this, the sales grew exponentially for her first two books.
Her self-published book “Hopeless” hit the markets in December 2012. On January 6, 2013, it ranked #19 in the New York Times Best Seller list. On January 20, it reached the #1 spot and remained there for three weeks.
“Hopeless” is about a girl who was home-schooled from when she was young and all her life. She then finally attends a public high school. This is where she experiences everything including falling in love.
“Hopeless” became the first self-published novel to reach the #1 on the New York Times Best Seller list and the #1 best-selling self-published e-book of 2013. Overall, it ranked #16 bestselling e-book of 2013.
Colleen Hoover sold the paperback rights of “Hopeless” to Atria Books in January 2013. The paperback was released on May 7, 2013. However, Hoover still owns her e-book rights at present.
