Bellator History
Bellator was first founded by Bjorn Rebney in 2008. He was the Chairman and the CEO of the mixed martial arts company while Tim Danaher was the President. Under Rebney’s administration, the events of the company were single-elimination tournaments.
In December 2011, Viacom bought the majority of Bellator.
In June 2014, Rebney and Danaher were relieved from their positions. Scott Coker became the head of the company. The events held by Bellator under Rebney became more of a traditional, single-fight event schedule. The promotion company began to host a divisional grand-prix tournament in 2018.
In 2011, the fourth season, Bellator events were aired on Viacom-owned networks in the United States. The telecasts were later telecast on Paramount Network in 2013. Bellator also signed a multi-year partnership agreement with Fox Sports Latin America. THe company announced a five-year streaming deal with DAZN on June 26, 2018.
With Viacom’s re-merger with CBS in 2019, “Bellator MMA: Recharged,” debuted on April 25, 2020.
The Bellator MMA European Series was launched in 2019. It only airs on the BBC Network in the United Kingdom. The series has held live events in Ireland, Italy and France, in addition to multiple cities across the UK.
In the United States, the tournaments can be seen on SHOWTIME, while in the United Kingdom, people can watch them on BBC iPlayer. The company also has a channel on Pluto TV, which was launched in 2020.
