Ali Wong was born in San Francisco, California, particularly in the Pacific Heights neighborhood. Her father was Adolphus Wong, a Chinese-American anesthesiologist. Her mother, Tammy Wong, was a social worker who immigrated from Huế, Central Vietnam in 1960 to the US. Ali is the youngest of four siblings.
Wong graduated from San Francisco University High School in 2000 where she was also the student body class president. She then attended UCLA, where she got a degree in Asian American studies. At the university, she joined LCC Theatre Company, where she discovered her love for performing. When she was in her junior year, she spent time in Hanoi, Vietnam.
She graduated summa cum laude in 2005. After college, she studied in Vietnam through a Fulbright scholarship program.

After graduating, she moved to New York City to pursue a career in comedy. In 2011, Variety named her one of the “10 Comics to Watch.”
