Personal Life
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on January 27, 1756, at Getreidegasse 9 in Salzburg, a part of the Holy Roman Empire (called Austria today). He was baptised as Joannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart. His parents are Leopold Mozart and Anna Maria Mozart.
He was the youngest of seven children. Five of his siblings died in infancy. His elder sister, Maria Anna Mozart, was nicknamed “Nannerl,” and both of them are considered child prodigies. Their father was also a musician. When Wolfgang was young, his family went on a music tour to several places in Europe.
Wolfgang was accepted as a member of the Accademia Filarmonica, a famous musical institution in Bologna, Italy.
In Rome, he heard Gregorio Allegri’s performing “Miserere” twice in the Sistine Chapel. He wrote it from memory and the copy is being closely guarded by the Vatican.
When he was 14, he wrote the opera “Mitridate, re di Ponto” which was performed successfully. This led to more opera compositions by him.
Professional Career
On March 13, 1773, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart became a court musician in Salzburg. During this time, he composed many violin and piano concertos. He also got to work in many genres including string quartets, sonatas, serenades, and symphonies.
Mozart grew unsatisfied in Salzburg because of the low salary and he felt like he was not doing many compositions as he would have liked. The situation got worse when the court theatre closed down. In 1777, he resigned in Salzburg.
With his father, he ventured to Munich, Vienna, and Paris for work opportunities. Mozart became acquainted with a famous orchestra in Mannheim. Without work in Mannheim, Wolfgang moved on to Paris. He fell into debt and even pawned his things. His mother fell ill and died at home during this time.
In January 1781, Mozart’s opera “Idomeneo” debuted in Munich with success. He also met the Emperor.
He started a new career in Vienna where he established himself as the finest pianist in the country. He settled there and achieved much success. He created many compositions until his death on December 5, 1971. The circumstances of his death are uncertain, but by his final days, he was bedridden.
