Personal Life
Tank Abbott was born David Lee Abbott on April 26, 1965, in Huntington Beach, California. He started amateur wrestling when he was only nine years old. In high school, he continued wrestling and he also played football.
He continued wrestling when he went to college at California State University, Long Beach where he graduated with a degree in History. He was also an NJCAA All-American. During this time he was trained in boxing by Noe Cruz.
During his time in college, he got engaged in a lot of street fights. Once, while working at a liquor store to pay for his college fees, he beat a customer who turned out to be a son of a detective. Charges were pressed and Tank was sentenced to six months in jail.
Professional Career
Tank Abbott began his mixed martial arts (MMA) when he applied for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) for UFC 6 Clash of the Titans in Casper, Wyoming. He made his debut at UFC in July 1995.
For his debut, he knocked out the Hawaiian Kapu Kuialua fighter named John Matua in just 18 seconds into their fight. He then advanced to the next round and Paul Varelans was named his opponent, whom he also defeated.
At the finals, Abbott was pitted against the Russian fighter, Oleg Taktarov. Although Taktarov won the fight at the 17-minute mark, the referee of the match called Tank Abbott was the next big star of the sport.
Abbott returned the same year as part of the Ultimate Ultimate event. After this, his next appearance was in September 1996 at UFC 11. He fought the professional boxer Sam Adkins and their fight ended quickly with Abbott winning. Ultimate Ultimate 1996 was the last UFC tournament in which Abbott competed.
Tank Abbott was also a professional wrestler with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) from 1999 to 2000.
In 2003, he made a comeback to the UFC but this was not as successful. He also competed in the main event of Elite XC: Street Certified. In 2013, At King of the Cage: Fighting Legends, Abbott was defeated by Ruben “Warpath” Villareal.
In December 2018, Abbott revealed that due to his lifestyle his liver had to be replaced.
