Chhetri is regarded as one of the greatest Indian players in history. Aside from this, he is the all-time top goalscorer for India. He is also the sixth-highest goalscorer in international football.

In his successful career, he has been a part of India’s wins in the Nehru Cup (2007, 2009 and 2012), the 2011 SAFF Championship, the 2011 AFC Asian Cup. 

Chhetri owns an Audi 6 and a number of bikes. He and his wife live in a big house in Bengaluru.

Personal Life

Sunil Chhetri was born on August 3, 1984, in Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh. Sunnil is Nepalese in origin but lived in India all his life. His father, Kharga Chhetri, was a former officer at the Electronic and Mechanical Corps and played for the Indian Army Soccer team. His mother Sushila Chhetri also played for Nepal Women’s National Team. Their family is indeed blessed with athletic genes. Sunnil has a sister named Bandana Chetri who is a sports executive.

He went to Bahai School in Gangtok, Sikkim. He then moved to New Delhi to study in an Army public school. He finished his intermediate education at Asutosh College in Kolkata. 

He joined India’s national team at the age of 18 and made his international debut at 20 years old.

Professional Career

Sunnil Chhetri started playing professionally for Mohun Bagan of the National Football League. He played there from 2002 to 2005. Next, he joined Jagatjit Cotton & Textile Football Club (JCT FC) from 2005 to 2008. In 2008, there were reports that international clubs were interested in signing him. The clubs were  Leeds United of the Football League One and Estoril Praia of the Liga de Honra. 

During the 2008 to 2009 season, Chhetri was playing for East Bengal, however, it was a short stint as he signed with Dempo in May of 2009.

On 30 August 2009 it was reported that he had signed a three-year contract with English Football League Championship side Queens Park Rangers, but this did not materialize as he was denied a British working permit.

In 2010, he signed with the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer. He became just the third Indian football player to play in the league. 

In 2013, he signed with his current team, Bengaluru.

Sunnil Chhetri Relationship Status

Sunnil Chettri met his beautiful wife, Sonam Bhattacharya, when he was 18 and she was 15. They continued to be friends until their relationship blossomed into love. After 13 long years of dating, the two decided to tie the knot in 2017. The couple doesn’t have any kids yet.
