Shreya Ghoshal was born on March 12, 1984, in Murshidabad of West Bengal state. She was raised in Rawatbhata, a small town near Kota, Rajasthan. Her father named Bishwajit Ghoshal works as an electrical engineer for the Nuclear Power Corporation of India. Her mother is Sarmistha Ghoshal and she has a younger brother named Soumyadeep Ghoshal.
At only four years old, she started learning music. At the age of six, she started her formal training in classical music. Until eighth grade, she attended the Atomic Energy Central School No.4 in Rawatbhata. She won the All India Light Vocal Music Competition, New Delhi in 1995, which was organized by Sangam Kala Group, in Light Vocal group in sub-junior level.
In 1997, Shreya Ghoshal’s father then worked at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, in Mumbai, so their family relocated. She continued her studies at the Atomic Energy Central School in Anushakti Nagar.
She also went to Atomic Energy Junior College to study science. She then dropped out to enroll at the SIES College of Arts, Science, and Commerce in Mumbai, where she studied arts with English as her major.
When she was 16, she won the television music reality show Sa Re Ga Ma.
Professional Career
Her first recorded song was “Ganraj Rangi Nachato” which is originally sung by Lata Mangeshkar. She released her debut studio album on January 1, 1998, entitled “Bendhechhi Beena.”
In 2000, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and music director Ismail Darbar offered Shreya Ghoshal the chance to be the voice of Paro who is the lead female character of the film Devdas. Ghoshal sang five songs in the movie.
When the movie was released, many film companies called to record her voice for many movies. After singing traditional semi-classical songs for other movies, Ghoshal then sang two seductive numbers for M. M. Kreem’s Jism which absolutely broadened her range.
