Personal Life
Sally Lowenthal, popularly known as Sally Jessy Raphael, was born on February 25, 1935, in Easton, Pennsylvania.
She also spent some time in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where Jesse Lowenthal, her father, was in the rum exporting business, whereas her mother Zelda Lowenthal managed her own art gallery. Sally also has a younger sibling, Steven Lowenthal.
She graduated from Easton Area High School. She spent some of her adolescence in Scarsdale, New York City, where one of her first media works was at WFAS, the local AM radio station.
The station aired a program by and for junior high school students where Sally delivered the news. She also enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan.
Sally learned acting at New York City’s Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater under the tutelage of Sanford Meisner.
She took Raphael, her mother’s maiden surname, as her professional surname and added Jessy from her father’s side.
Professional Career
Sally Jessy Raphael started working right after finishing her education at the University of Columbia as a news correspondent. That was her first broadcast news job. She delivered the news in both English and Spanish.
She also worked in a local radio station in Puerto Rico and hosted a cooking show on TV. While working in one of the radio stations, Sally met Karl Soderland, her second husband, who was the manager of the radio station.
She switched from one radio station to the other and got fired in 18 of them. However, she found her luck on a radio show where she did a piece of call-in advice in the 80s.
In 1989, she got a Daytime Emmy Award for an Outstanding Talk Show. She hosted the show between 1981 and 1987. And because the show was so popular, it was later named the “Sally Jessy Raphael Show.” It was later shortened to just the “Sally Show,” which lasted until 2004.
Additionally, she starred as herself in the Equalizer episode of “Making a Martyr.” In 2002, Sally took spot 5 out of 25 on Talkers Magazine, which named her as the best host to have hosted the most important radio talk show.
In 2010, Sally, along with a few other retired talk show hosts, including Phil Donahue, Ricki Lake, Geraldo Rivera, and Montel Williams, was invited to “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

Sally Jessy Raphael was 18 when she married Andrew Vladimir in 1953. They had two daughters together, Andrea and Allison. The couple divorced 5 years later. Their daughter, Allison, died at the age of 33 due to an accidental overdose.
Sally married Karl Soderlund in 1962. He later became her manager during her career. The couple has a son together, Jason. They stayed married for nearly six decades until Karl’s passing in 2020.
