Personal Life
Rishi Kapoor was born on September 4, 1952 at his family’s home, referred to as the Raj Kapoor Bungalow, in South Bombay, India. His family is a Punjabi Hindu Khatri family of the Kapoor clan. He was the second son of the actor and director Raj Kapoor and his wife Krishna Malhotra.
He studied at the Colonel Brown Cambridge School in Dehradun, Campion School also in Bombay. He then attended Mayo College, an independent boarding school in Ajmer, Rajasthan, India.
Kapoor’s family is very prominent in India as many of their relatives are part of Bollywood and well-known actors and actresses.
He died on April 30, 2020 after a two-year battle with Leukemia.
Professional Career
Rishi Kapoor made his acting debut in the 1970 film titled “Mera Naam Joker” where he played the younger version of his father’s character Raju. His father is also the director of the movie.
In 1973, he got his first title role opposite Dimple Kapadia in the movie “Bobby” which was a huge success and became one of the biggest movies of that decade in India. For his portrayal in “Bobby” Kapoor received the Filmfare Best Actor Award.
Following the success of the film, he was paired up with his future wife Neetu Singh in films such as “Zahreela Insaan,” “Khel Khel Mein,” “Kabhie Kabhie,” and “Amar Akbar Anthony.” Rishi Kapoor also starred in a lot of romantic comedies. He got married to Neetu in 1980.
In 1980, he starred in the thriller movie “Karz” with Tina Munim. The movie later became a cult classic and went on to be one of Kapoor’s most popular works. In 1991, opposite Pakistani actress Zeba Bakhtiyar, Rishi starred in “Henna,” which is a tale of love across borders. The film was from the mind of his father, Raj Kapoor, and directed by his brother Randhir Kapoor. “Henna” was submitted to the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in that year.
In 2013, he appeared in the film “Agneepath” which earned him three awards, including the Zee Cine Award for Best Actor in a Negative Role, The Times of India Film Awards (TOIFA) for the Best Actor in a Negative Role, and IIFA Award for the Best Performance in a Negative Role.
