During his high school years, he was a very good student. He had good grades and even scored in the 98th percentile on the ACT. In his sophomore year, he won the state title in track and was a star football player. He had many scholarship offers from different colleges
In the first football game of Richie’s junior year, he broke his arm. The injury was a major one and required surgery. After that, he was prescribed two different types of very addictive narcotic pain killers. This became the start of his addiction to painkillers and eventually to heroin. Because of his addiction, he lost all of his scholarships. Weber said that he tried to get clean many times but he had no access to the right institution or rehab center. He overdosed so many times and even his own mother administered CPR on him.
He had outstanding charges and on November 6, 2014, he turned himself in to the county jail. While in prison, his mother visited him and broke the news of his friend, Bryce’s death due to drug overdose. That was a turning point for Richie Webber. From that moment, he decided that he would fight his addiction with commitment.
He used exercise to work his cravings for opioids to exhaustion. He then attended 12-step meetings every day. As of 2022, Richie has been clean for 4 years.
Professional Career
After getting out of jail, he decided to inspire other using his story. Now, he travel around the US to encourage people to get the help they need. He talks about addiction and rehabilitation openly.
Richie Weber also funded a non-profit called #FightForRecovery in honor of his best friend, Charles Buchanan, who also died from a heroin overdose.
