Personal Life
Richard Dawkins was born Clinton Richard Dawkins on March 26, 1941, in Nairobi, Kenya. His parents are Jean Mary Vyvyan and Clinton John Dawkins. He was born in Kenya because his father was called up into the King’s African Rifles during World War II. He has a younger sister named Sarah.
When he was eight, his family returned to England. He attended the Chafyn Grove School, in Wiltshire and after he entered the Oundle School, where he was in Laundimer House. In 1962, Dawkins graduated with second-class honors from Balliol College, Oxford where he studied Zoology. By 1966, he obtained his PhD.
During his time at Oxford, he was tutored by Nikolaas Tinbergen, a Nobel Prize-winning ethologist. His research focused on animal behavior, instinct, learning, and choice. Oxford awarded Dawkins a Doctor of Science in 1989.
Professional Career
Richard Dawkins was an assistant professor of zoology at the University of California, Berkeley from 1967 to 1969. In 1970, he returned to Oxford as a lecturer and in 1990, he became a reader in zoology. He also became the first Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford in 1995 until 2008 when he retired from professorship.
Since 1970, he has been a fellow of New College, Oxford, and currently he is an emeritus fellow. Dawkins has given many lectures and edited several journals. In 2011, he joined the faculty of the New College of the Humanities in London established by A. C. Grayling.
He is best known for his book “The Selfish Gene” which he wrote in 1976. The book’s main point is “all life evolves by the differential survival of replicating entities.”
He is a contributor to the online science and culture digest called “3 Quarks Daily.”
