Personal Life
Rahul Gandhi was born on June 19, 1970 in New Delhi, India. His parents are Sonia & Rajiv Gandhi and his grandparents are Firoze Gandhi & Indira Gandhi. He came from a prominent Indian family who are mostly involved in politics. His father, Rajiv Gandhi, was the prime minister of India from 1984 to 1989. His paternal grandmother was also the prime minister of India. Indira Gandhi was assassinated in 1984, before Rahul’s father took over the position. He has a younger sister named Priyanka Vadra, who is also an Indian politician and the general secretary of the All India Congress Committee.
Rahul Gandhi went to St. Columba’s School in Delhi before attending The Doon School from 1981 to 1983. After his grandmother was killed, Rahul and his sister were homeschooled. In 1989, he studied at the St. Stephen’s College and later transferred to Harvard University a year later. His father, Rajiv, was also assassinated in 1991. This led to Rahul transferring to Rollins College in Florida, USA where he earned his B.A. degree. In 1995, he obtained his Master in Philosophy from Trinity College in Cambridge.
Professional Career
After graduating, Rahul Gandhi worked at a management consulting firm in London for three years. After that, he came back to India to set up Backops Services Private Ltd in Mumbai.
In March 2004, he entered politics representing the constituency of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh in the Lok Sabha which his father formerly represented. He was appointed as the General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee on September 24, 2007. He also became in charge of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) and the National Students Union of India (NSUI). While in charge of IYC and NSUI, the members increased exponentially from 200,000 to 2.5 million.
In the 2009 Indian general election, Rahul was reelected and retained his Amethi seat. In 2014, he lost to Narenda Modi for Prime Minister of India. He has been representing the constituency of Wayanad since he won the election in 2019.
