Oliver Sykes was born to Ian and Carol Sykes on November 20, 1986, in Ashford, Kent, England. His family moved to Australia when he was a little child. They moved between Adelaide and Perth for about six years. The family returned to the United Kingdom when Sykes was eight years old. They settled in Stocksbridge in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. When he was a teenager, he studied at Stocksbridge High School then attended Barnsley College.
When he was in high school, he started his music career by putting together compilation CDs and short tracks under the name Quakebeat.

Sykes owns an apparel clothing company called Drop Dead Clothing. He also launched a graphic novel “Raised By Raptors” with Drop Dead Clothing artist Ben Ashton-Bell.
