Michael Moorer or Michael Lee Moorer was born on November 12, 1967, in Brooklyn in the state of New York. He was raised in Monessen, Pennsylvania by his mother.
When he was a kid, he took a lot of interest in football. When he was only 10 or 11 years old, his grandfather who is a former New York Golden Glove Champion, enrolled him into a boxing academy.
Michael Moorer went to Monessen High School and graduated in 1987 where he was a linebacker and tight end for their football team. It is said that he didn’t continue his studies and didn’t attend college.
The boxer relocated to Detroit, Michigan to train with Emanuel Steward who is also a boxing legend. In 1986, he became a National Champion in the light middleweight category. He finished his amateur career with a record of 48-16.

Professional Career
He started his professional boxing career on March 4, 1988. In that fight, Moorer defeated Ramzi Hassan and won the WBO light heavyweight title. The following year, he managed to defend his title six times. In 1990, he retained his title three times.
He then defeated Evander Holyfield n April 22, 1994, to get the title of Unified Heavyweight Champion. He became the first-ever southpaw heavyweight champion. On November 5, 1994, he successfully defended his title against George Foreman.
Michael Moorer became a three-time heavyweight champion – WBO in 1992, WBA/IBF in 1994, and IBF from 1996 to 1997. In 1997, he retained his belt with a 12-round decision over Vaughn Bean, who was previously undefeated. He parted ways with his trainer, Teddy Atlas, and replaced him with Freddie Roach.
He lost his IBF title in a match with WBA champion Evander Holyfield. He was knocked down five times before the doctor Flip Homansky told the referee, Mitch Halpern, to stop the fight in round 8.
After retiring for three years, he made his come back where he knocked out Lorenzo Boyd. He was defeated two times after that fight.
After laying low for quite some time, Michael Moorer fought again on July 3, 2004. It was against Eliseo Castillo in Miami, Florida.
