Martin Lind was born in Malmo, Sweden on March 14, 1944. When he was a teen, he was the chairman of the Malmo Christian Upper Secondary School Students’ Association or Malmo KGF. He was also active in the Societas Sanctae Birgittae.
In 1975, he obtained his PhD in theology at the University of Lund. His thesis focussed on Christianity and Nazism.

Professional Career
In 1966, he was ordained as a priest for the Diocese of Lund. He was only 22 years old at that time. In that same year, he became the president of the Christian Student Association in Lund. Lind was also the chair of the Christian Student Movement in Sweden from 1972 to 1977.
He was part of the fourth general assembly of the World Council of Churches (WCC) in Uppsala, Sweden which was held in 1968. In the fall of 1968, Martin Lind joined an anti-apartheid campaign at the Lund Cathedral when it was visited by several foreign diplomates. Because of it, he, along with four others were charged with disorderly conduct and was ordered to pay a fine.
Lind worked as an associate professor of systematic theology at the University of Lund. Afterwards, he taught at Tamil Nadu Theological Seminary in India for two years.
He returned to Sweden and became a pastor from 1980 to 1983 at the Kävlinge Parish Church in the Diocese of Lund. Lind then served as acting rector (later becoming the rector) of the Church of Sweden’s Pastoral Institute in Lund. In 1984 he was voted to be the vice chair of the Church of Sweden’s Council for Inter-Church and Ecumenical Relations.
Martin Lind was also appointed the dean of Uppsala Cathedral in 1990. Five years later, the Swedish government appointed him bishop of the Diocese of Linköping on February 1, 1995. He was consecrated by the Archbishop of Uppsala Gunnar Weman.
