Mahmoud is also known as the kunya of Abu Mazen which means “father of Mazen.” His oldest son, Mazen, died in 2002 because of a heart attack. Professional Career
Mahmoud Abbas was heavily involved in politics even as a young adult. In the 1950s he joined Qatar’s civil service and established a connection with many Palestinian individuals and groups. He was then recruited by Yasser Arafat in Kuwait in 1961 to become one of the early members of Fatah, along with five other Palestinians. The group played a big role in initiating peace with Israelis.
In the 1990s, he molded the Palestinian negotiating strategies at the peace conference in Madrid and in secret meetings in Norway. From then on, both countries recognized each other mutually.
In 2003, Israel and the United States did not want to negotiate with Palestine’s then-prime minister Yasser Arafat. Both countries thought that Mahmoud Abbas would be a better leader as he was one of the founding members of Fatah. This created tension between Arafat and Abbas.
In November 2004, Arafat died and Abbas became the head of the Palestine Liberation Organization. In January 2005, he got the majority of the votes to be the president of the Palestine National Authority.
He resigned as the leader of the PLO on August 22, 2015.
