Personal Life
Karl Heinrich Marx was born on May 5, 1818, Trier, Prussia, German Confederation. He is the third of nine children. In August 1824, he and his surviving siblings – Sophie, Hermann, Henriette, Louise, Emilie, and Caroline – were baptized into the Lutheran Church.
Marx was privately educated by his father until 1830. After this, he went to Trier High School. At 17 years old, he traveled to the University of Bonn wanting to study philosophy and literature, but his father insisted on law. While studying there, he joined the Poets’ Club which is a group of political radicals closely monitored by the police. His grades for the first term were good but gradually deteriorated. Due to this reason, his father transferred him to the University of Berlin.
He spent the autumn of 1836 back in Trier. At this time he got serious with his education. He also got engaged to Jenny von Westphalen.
In October 1836, Karl Marx arrived at the University of Berlin. He was studying law but his interest in philosophy was always there. He looked for a way of combining the two subjects as he believed that “”without philosophy nothing could be accomplished.”
Marx was writing both fiction and non-fiction by 1837. He completed a short novel, “Scorpion and Felix.” and a drama, “Oulanem.” His controversial doctoral thesis called “The Difference Between the Democritean and Epicurean Philosophy of Nature” was finished in 1841.
Professional Career
In 1842, Karl Marx moved to Cologne, Germany. He became a journalist for the newspaper, Rheinische Zeitung. The following year, he became the co-editor of the Parisian newspaper, the Deutsch-Französische Jahrbücher.
After the collapse of the paper, he began writing for the German-language radical newspaper called, “Vorwärts!”
A clear view of “Marxism” was in his mind by late 1844. He wrote many essays and manuscripts concerning Marxism and other topics
Some of his most famous works aside from “The Communist Manifesto” and “Das Kapital” are “The Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts,” “The German Ideology,” and “The Poverty of Philosophy.”
Marx spent three successive periods of exile in the capital cities of France, Belgium, and England.

Karl Marx married Jenny von Westphalen six years after their engagement. She is a member of the petty nobility who knew Marx since they were children. On June 19, 1843, they married in a Protestant church in Kreuznach.
They had seven children but they were so impoverished that only three survived to adulthood.
