Junichi Masuda was born on January 12, 1968 in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. When he was young, his family would often spend their vacation in Kyūshū, where many of his relatives still live. There he spent his time catching fish and insects, and more. The activities he did influenced his future Pokemon games. Kyūshū became the basis of Pokemon’s world’ Hoenn.
When he was in high school, Masuda played the trombone. He also discovered and loved classical music. He was drawn in by works like Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. He also knows how to play the piano.
Junichi Masuda studied computer graphics and the C programming language using a DEC Professional at Japan Electronics College, a technical school in Shinjuku, Tokyo.
The programmer has a daughter named Kiri who was born in September 2002. He named a character in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire after her.
Professional Career
Junichi Masuda has been with Game Freak since it was established in 1989. He developed his first game for the company, called Mendel Palace. It is a puzzle game that they developed for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
Game Freak later began developing the Pokemon Games. For Pokemon, Masuda worked as the composer and did minor programming. He has been very much involved with every Pokemon game, including design, until today. Junichi was appointed sub-director for Pokémon Gold and Silver and has directed or co-directed every core series.
Since Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, he has been one of the main employees who approve or reject designs for new Pokémon. He was on the Game Freak board of directors.
On November 1, 2018, Masuda said that “Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!” would be his final time as the director for the main series Pokémon games. But he still directed “Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl,” after that.
Junichi produced the ending themes “Pokémon Shiritori” and “Batsugun Type” for Pokemon Journeys.
He transferred from Game Freak to The Pokémon Company in 2022, where he now serves as the Chief Creative Fellow.
