Vivek Ravisankar and Hari Karunanidhi are two National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (NIT Trichy) graduates. The school is a public technical and research university close to Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, India.
In August 2009, the pair co-founded Interviewstreet.com. In September 2012, the start-up became HackerRank. HackerRank is a Y Combinator-backed company. If you don’t know, Y Combinator is a start-up accelerator and has launched successful start-ups such as AirBnB , DoorDash, DropBox, InstaCart, Quora, Stripe, Cruise, and Reddit. Y Combinator was founded in 2005 by Paul Graham, Jessica Livingston, Robert Tappan Morris, and Trevor Blackwell. HackerRank was the first Indian company accepted into Y Combinator. That’s an amazing feat, if you ask me!
They aim to accelerate the world’s innovation by transforming the developer hiring process to be based on skill vs pedigree. They work with companies who are just getting started all the way to Fortune 100 companies like Amazon, Apple, Salesforce, Walmart, etc.
In October 2014, the company moved to an office space in Mountain View, Santa Clara County, California. The space is able to hold twice as many people as they had at the time. At this time, their revenue also doubled in just three to six months.
In July 2015, the company received $7.5 million funding from Recruit Holdings’ HR technology fund. HackerRank announced that they had raised $30 million in Series C funding, led by JMI Equity, in February 2018.
In December 2019, HackerRank acquired Mimir which is a cloud-based service that provides tools for teaching computer science courses. Mimir is also used by Google and some universities.
