Born as Joseph Theodore Rzeznik in Buffalo, New York to parents who are both musicians, there’s no question that music was a part of his life growing up. His parents played the clarinet and the flute. 

John grew up in a Catholic household. His mother, Edith, is a teacher and his father, Joe, is a postal clerk and bar owner. He has four older sisters named Gladys, Phyliss, Fran, and Kate. When he was 16, his father died due to a diabetic coma and his mother died because of a heart attack. His sister Phyllis became his legal guardian.

John Rzeznik went to Corpus Christi Grammar School and McKinley Vocational High School where he learned how to play the guitar. He then attended Buffalo State College but dropped out after his freshman year.

His sisters loved classic rock, like the Rolling Stones, so John became exposed to it. He became fond of Ramones, Kiss, The Cure, and other bands. John stated himself that Paul Westerberg was one of his musical influences.

John Rzeznik Professional Career

In 1985, John Rzeznik co-founded their band Goo Goo Dolls Robby Takac and George Tutuska. Takac was a bassist and vocalist while Tutuska was the drummer. During the band’s early days, they always went on gigs. Then, a small record label, Celluloid, signed them up.

Soon after, the band released their self-titled debut album. This attracted the attention of a bigger company, Metal Blade. Metal Blade was responsible for releasing their next albums. In 1989, their second album “Jed” was released. 

The band’s songs were played on local and college radio stations and they began playing in small venues. Goo Goo Dolls’ third album, “Hold Me Up,” hit the market in 1990 and was included on the “Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare” soundtrack the next year. 

In 1993, they released another album called “Superstar Car Wash” with Warner Bros. Records. Under the same label, they released “A Boy Named Goo” in 1995, “Dizzy Up The Girl” in 1998, “Gutterflower” in 2002, “Left Love In” in 2006, “Something for the Rest of Us” in 2010, “Magnetic” in 2013, and “Boxes” in 2016. 

In 2019, they produced an album called “Miracle Pill.” The next year, they released another titled “It’s Christmas All Over.”

One of their most iconic songs is “Iris” their 1998 single. It was such a huge success that it is even played and remembered to this day.

John Rzeznik married the ex-model, Laurie Farinacci, in 1993, a few years after meeting her. They divorced in 2003. 

 He then met Melina Gallo and started dating her in 2005. The two had a lovely wedding on July 26, 2013, in Malibu, California. They have one daughter, Liliana, who was born on December 22, 2016. They currently reside in Westfield, New Jersey.
