John Green was born on August 24, 1977, in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. As of 2022, the author is 45 years old. His parents are Mike and Sydney Green. Shortly after he was born, his family moved to Michigan, then to Birmingham, Alabama, and finally settled in Orlando, Florida.

Green studied at Glenridge Middle School and Lake Highland Preparatory School in Orlando. In 1995, he graduated from  Indian Springs School which was outside of Birmingham. This was also the inspiration for the setting of “Looking for Alaska.” In 2005, he graduated from Kenyon College where he earned dual degrees in English and Religious Studies.

After graduating, he wanted to be an Episcopal priest. However, after being a student chaplain at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, which brought him traumatic experiences, he chose another path which is writing.

Professional Career

After deciding to be an author, John Green began his literary career working as a reviewer, editor, and publishing assistant for Booklist in Chicago. While he was there, he reviewed hundreds of books/ He has also critiqued books for The New York Times Book Review and wrote radio essays for various public stations.

His first novel, “Looking for Alaska,” was published by Dutton Children’s Books in 2005 and was awarded the annual Michael L. Printz Award by the American Library Association (ALA). It was also included in the ALA’s “Top 10 Best Books for Young Adults.”

The following year, Green published his second book “An Abundance of Katherines.” The novel was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the Printz Award.

His next novel “Paper Towns,” debuted at #5 on The New York Times Best Seller list for children’s books. It was awarded the Edgar Award for Best Young Adult Novel in 2009 and the Corine Literature Prize in 2010.

“The Fault in Our Stars,” was released in January 2012 and later had a movie adaptation and was a huge hit. It was #1 on the New York Times Best Seller list for two weeks. Another novel of his “Turtles All the Way Down,” was released in 2018, and debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list.
