Guido Van Rossum’s net worth is around $10 million. He created the Python programming language and was considered the “benevolent dictator for life” (BDFL) until July 2018, when he stepped down from the position. 

He also worked at Google from December 2005 to September 2012 as Staff Software Engineer and as a Senior Staff Software Engineer. He was also a Language Architect at Elemental Security before joining Google. 

Aside from Google, Van Rossum also worked at Dropbox as a Principal Engineer. Currently, he is working in Microsoft.

Personal Life

Guido Van Rossum was born on January 31 1956 in The Hague, Netherlands. On his 10th birthday, he got an electronic kit which heavily influenced his interest in electronics. He received a bronze medal in 1974 in the International Mathematical Olympiad.

In 1982, he graduated from the University of Amsterdam where he received a master’s degree in mathematics and computer science.

Professional Career

While finishing his master’s degree, Guido van Rossum was a part-time system programmer at Stichting Academisch Rekencentrum (SARA). 

After graduating from the university, he worked at Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI). He wrote a global routine to BSD Unix in 1986 and assisted in developing the ABC programming language. Guido also created Grail which is an early web browser written in Python. He wrote Python in 1989 and released it in 1991.

He worked for different research institutes – the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in the Netherlands, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the Corporation for National Research Initiatives (CNRI). 

At CWI, Van Rossum worked from December 1982 to April 1995. After working at CWI, he got a job at CNRI. In May 2000, he left CNRI together with three other Python core developers to work for a tech startup called BeOpen.com. The startup unfortunately collapsed by October of the same year. 

From late 2000 until 2003 he was the Director of PythonLabs for Zope Corporation. After three years, Guido Van Rossum joined Elemental Security as a language architect. At Elemental Security, he worked on a custom programming language.

From 2005 to December 2012, he worked at Google. At Google, he spent half of his time developing Python. He also developed an internal tool for web-based code review named Mondrian.

 In January 2013, he worked for DropBox. 

In October 2019, Guido van Rossum officially retired but he came out of retirement the following year to join Microsoft where he holds the title of Distinguished Engineer.
